Located south of Oceanside and west of Vista is the picturesque ocean front community of Carlsbad.  In the late 19th century the ground water from a local Carlsbad well was tested and found to be similar to the water in some of the renowned European spas.  This discovery resulted in the town being named Carlsbad after the Bohemian spa destination town of Karlsbad.

Development continued through the late 19th century including agriculture in from the coast.  The municipality of Carlsbad was incorporated in 1952.
