Located north of Rancho Bernardo and east of San Marcos is Escondido.  Originally incorporated in 1886, Escondido is one of the oldest communities in the greater San Diego area.  Initial development of the area as an agricultural community was driven in large part by the installation of the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroad lines in the 1880s.
