The site of the first Spanish settlement in California in 1769, Mission Valley would wait nearly 200 years for development to begin in earnest.  In 1953 the first hotel was built in Mission Valley and in 1961 the first shopping mall, what is now Westfield Mission Valley, opened.  Mission Valley also contains the site of what was once Westgate Park, a stadium for the San Diego Padres.  The high end Fashion Valley shopping mall now sits upon the site.
