Located west of Black Mountain Ranch and east of the San Elijo lagoon is Rancho Santa Fe.  The low density community master plan was designed by architect Lilian Rice in 1921 after the land was purchased by Santa Fe Land Improvement Company, a subsidiary of the Santa Fe Railway.
