Located north of Escondido and south of Vista is San Marcos.  San Marcos was first known as Barham, named for the founder John H. Barham.   Development of San Marcos began around the rail lines of the Rancho Santa Fe Railroad in the late 1880s.  Fueled by the arrival of water from the Colorado River, development of San Marcos began to boom in 1956.
