Located east of Carlsbad and north of San Marcos is Vista.  Having recently emigrated from France, in 1886 Bernard and Jules Delpy completed construction in Vista of the first successful winery in the history of the United States.  Water was the primary restraint on growth in Vista until construction was completed of a large scale water supply from Lake Henshaw.  Vista would eventually become known as the "avocado capital of the world".
